You Belong Here ... with Jesus

Bottom Line: You were made to be with Jesus

Bible: Matthew 14:22-33

We all have a need to belong to someone and somewhere. God created us with this built-in desire so that we would live in relationship with him and in community with others. This week, we want to communicate to each student, “You belong here … with Jesus.” Just as he invited Peter to step out of the boat and walk on the water to be with him, Jesus is inviting us to step out of our comfort zones and come to Him.

Teaching Points

  1. Get out of the Boat. Like the other disciples and so many other people who believe in Jesus but don’t trust him enough to get out of the boat and walk on water, we tend to get stuck sitting in our own boat. Jesus invites us to step out in faith and trust him.
  2. Focus on Jesus. We tend to get worried about and distracted by the storming ocean around us. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, the raging storm and rising ocean loses it’s power over us.
  3. Take His Hand. Do you want to walk on water? Will trust him in the midst of whatever storm is raging around you? Will you trust him in the middle of the rising ocean? Or will you fall victim to the storm? Will you sink into the depths? We belong at Jesus’ side. His hand is reaching out to you. All you have to do is trust Him and take His hand.

Small Group Questions

This week you’ll spend most of your time reconnecting with or getting to know your students, getting them registered, and taking their photos. However, you might have time for one question related to the message. If you do, it could be one of these.

  1. What is the “ocean rising” that seems to be drowning you?
  2. In what part of your life do you feel like you’re sinking?
  3. What is your “boat”? What do you need to do to step out in faith to be with Jesus?
