This post introduces the concept of being consecrated. God has called His people to be set apart from the rest of the world. Believers still live in a sinful world but are commanded to allow God to work in their lives so that they can become holy as He is holy. Living in holiness causes His children to stand apart from the world. As Peter taught, being holy is not simply a state of being: it is a call to action. A life of holiness is a life of active transformation—a transformation of the whole person.

TRUTHThe ways of the world feel more attractive and fun.
:God calls us to live a life of holiness SET APART FOR CHRIST from the world and sin.

1 Peter 1:13–16

  1. By LOVING Jesus we become more LIKE Jesus.
Peter reminds us that the ultimate hope and grace of believers is found in Christ and will come to full fruition when He returns. In the meantime, believers are to be vigilant in their obedience to Christ, with their minds always inclined toward Him. Jesus is the embodiment of holiness. By following Him intently, we become more and more like Him, allowing Him to make us holy. Apart from Him, we cannot begin to live holy lives.
  2. When we LOVE Jesus, we realize we are NOT LIKE Jesus.
Part of being holy is recognizing sin. Peter explains to his audience that when God called them to follow Him, His holiness revealed their lives of sin. Because they were to be reflections of God’s holiness, they were to relinquish their sinful behavior and allow Him to transform all of their behavior.
  3. LOVING Jesus makes us NOT LIKE the world.
Peter quotes God’s command to His covenant people from Leviticus. In this context, God was instructing His people on how to be different from the world around them. Peter reiterates the importance of believers being different from the world. The behavior of God’s people gives a picture of God to the world. Therefore, His followers must seek to imitate His holiness so that the world will see a holy reflection of God.

  1. What is holiness?
  2. Why is holiness important to God?
  3. What happens when the lives of believers do not demonstrate holiness?
  4. Is it possible for believers to be truly holy? Why or why not?
  5. How do you think that God feels when believers do not live holy

It'd be super easy for us to fall into the pattern of constantly harping on our kids about their behavior. That would, however, either drive them into a legalistic view of Christianity or it would drive them away from Christ all together. A better approach is to openly acknowledge your own mistakes right along side of theirs. Show grace and mercy to your teen just as Christ has shown you grace and mercy for your sins. Foster in your teen a love for Christ that flows out of gratitude for His love and forgiveness. Then encourage your teen to continue developing a stronger sense of holiness in his or her life, recognizing that God intends us, as Christians, to be very different from the world around us.
